What is therapy like?
Therapy, sometimes known as psychotherapy or counseling, is a unique experience that involves meeting with a trained professional who can help address your needs and well-being. At Blanton-Peale we provide a safe, supportive and judgement free space to help you navigate the full range of your emotions. The professional relationship with a therapist will help you explore more fully your life experience. A therapist can partner with you to develop the tools and skills necessary for growth and change.
How long is a session?
Therapy sessions are usually 45 minutes. To best utilize therapy, it is recommended that clients commit to consistent appointments, usually on a weekly basis. For difficult times and/or for psychoanalysis, sessions may be more frequent.
What happens in the first session?
The first session consists of an initial interview – the first step to begin therapy. It involves meeting with a therapist and providing information related to what brings you to Blanton-Peale for support. We use the first session to determine whether we have the appropriate services for you and if so, to develop a plan for your care.

How do I get matched with a therapist?
Based on the information you share in the prospective client portal or when you call 212.725.7850, you will be assigned to a therapist who matches your scheduling availability and circumstances.
How can I begin seeing a psychiatrist?
After completing your initial appointments with a therapist for assessment and care planning, your therapist can request scheduling with a member of our psychiatry team. Please note that regular ongoing therapy along with medication management (when needed) can often alleviate challenging symptoms you may be experiencing.
What if I feel like my therapist isn’t a good fit?
We encourage you to meet with your new therapist for at least three sessions and discuss any difficulties with them directly if you are able. You can always contact us if at any point you have concerns or would like to request a transfer to another therapist.
